'I threw down my enemy' - Gandalf on Zirak-zigil by DonatoArts 'I threw down my enemy' - Gandalf on Zirak-zigil by DonatoArts

The closing days are upon my exhibit 'Silent Tragedies' at Last Rites Gallery in Manhattan. Feel free to swing by and take in some of the strongest work from the past two years, including 2015 calendar images from A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) to my deep passion for Middle-earth...A nice mention of the show from Hi Fructose magazine!

Apparently Tolkien's 'greatest' battle scenes are the ones whose majority is left to the reader's imagination! I love Gandalf's pose; he looks like he's using angelic kung-fu wizardry (which is how I prefer to imagine supernatural battles. My interpretation of the Valar's war with Melkor during the shaping of the world looked like an huge, epic 'Avatar' fight scene among a bunch of more 'human'-looking Hercules titans) I like your version of the Balrog; it actually looks creepier than the movie-version! :)

Gandalf's battle with the Balrog is one of the best scenes in the Lord of the Rings books. This painting truly captures the moment so perfectly. I love your depiction of the Balrog, and the perspective is just brilliant!
